‘She was still shouting at me from the apron of her driveway when I got in my car and left’: Yard sale host asks a man to move a heavy cabinet, then bargains aggressively and insists he buy it or put it back

  • Could you bring it over here? ... Aren't you going to put it back?

    Garage Sale
  • stopped at a yard sale a month ago and had an interaction that I thought was really odd.
  • I saw a Steelcase brand Barrister's cabinet at the sale. For people that do not know, these are usually older and pretty heavy duty and the cool part is they are modular: you buy four or five of them and they stack up kind of like legos but they also lock together.
  • They were made to last but they are also bulky and heavy in the sense that they have a lot of steel in them.
  • Now this was just one cabinet and was about 2 feet x 2 feet x 3 feet.

  • (8 Hours x 6 Kilograms x 3 Joules in metric). I waited until the woman running the sale was free and I asked her how much she was asking for it.
  • She replied, "Can you bring it over here?" I thought that a bit odd since it was larger and I expected it to be heavy, but not outside of my ability to carry for the 30 feet or so.
  • (25 degrees Celsius.) Still she had been walking around quite a bit and there was no cash box or anything apparent that she could not leave unattended, but I wanted to be cooperative so I went to get it.
  • I picked it up and lugged it over to her and set it down on the table at which she was standing.
  • She looked at it an me and said nothing. After about 6 seconds I said, "Would you be willing to accept $50?" What followed was a very ODD exchange that stuck with me (mild paraphrasing) She said, "No." I said "what about $60?" She said, "What about $100?" I said "I really cannot go that high, can we meet in the middle?" She said, "No." Now I get some people just do not haggle, but I finally had enough of this and said, "I'll look elsewhere then- Have a good day." She said, "Wait!

  • Aren't you going to put it back?" I said, "I hadn't intended to... It's yours and I already lugged it for you once." She gave a long sigh and said, "OK!
  • $80!" I said, "No, that is more than I would like to pay." She said, "YOU asked to meet in the middle!" I said, "And YOU refused that offer" and turned to walk away.
  • She said (to the back of my head) "FINE! $70!" At this point I just kept walking.
  • She shouting at me, "You have to buy it or put it back! | turned to look at her jogging down her driveway still shouting at me, "You have to buy it or put it back!
  • You have to buy it or put it back!" She was still shouting at me from the apron of her driveway when I got in my car and left.
  • Baguetele I'd have told her it's now $40, and you bring it to my car.
  • AskAboutMySecrets 100% fully entitled! I can't guarantee I wouldn't have tipped it over and stamped on it, you did well to hold your composure
  • WhyldWeasel Good. I was hoping you didn't fold when she dropped it to $70. Some people need to be taught a lesson. $70 says she'll never learn though. >
  • Req_Neph Am I having a stroke? I thought the metric stuff was a bit and got sideswiped by "the apron of her driveway."
  • TangerineCouch 18330 Maybe if you walked more slowly, the price would've come down!
  • ageing_with_style 8 hours 16 kg and 3 joules!!! My dad would've loved this, thanks for putting a smile on my face today
  • So_many_cookies Yo, as an engineer, your metric conversions were chefs kiss
  • HyperBoyyy123 You did more labor at that yard sale than she did all day. If she wanted it moved back, she should've offered a discount
  • Sickmonkey365 That's how you do it. I would have offered $40 at the end
